Government Likely to Announce 3% DA Hike in September 2024, No Plans to Release DA Arrears

Government to Announce 3% DA Increase

The central government will announce a 3% DA and DR increase in September 2024.This increase, effective from July 1, 2024, will raise the total DA to 53%.

Government Stance on 18-Month DA Arrears

Despite the upcoming hike, the government will likely withhold the 18-month arrears for DA and DR that it paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the recent monsoon session of Parliament, two members raised queries regarding the government’s position on the withheld DA arrears.

No Plans to Release Arrears

Minister Pankaj Chaudhary stated there are no plans to release the 18-month DA/DR arrears for central government employees and pensioners. The government froze DA/DR payments due on January 1, 2020, July 1, 2020, and January 1, 2021, to alleviate financial strain during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic’s financial impact and welfare funding created fiscal constraints beyond FY 2020-21, making arrears release impractical.
