Congress and NC pact for J&K polls
On Monday, the Congress party and its ally in the INDIA bloc, the National Conference, announced their seat-sharing plan for the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The National Conference will contest 51 seats, while Congress will run candidates in 32 seats. Both parties have agreed to have a friendly competition for 5 additional seats. Furthermore, they will reserve 1 seat for the CPI (M) and 1 seat for the Panthers Party, as reported by Tariq Hameed Karra, the head of the J&K Congress.
During the briefing, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal discussed the current situation, highlighting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying to undermine the core identity of Jammu and Kashmir. He stressed that the main objective of the INDIA alliance is to protect the essence of Jammu and Kashmir. This commitment drives Congress and the National Conference to collaborate in forming a government that prioritizes a positive relationship with the local community.
On August 22, both parties announced their plans for a pre-poll alliance, which will cover all 90 seats in Jammu and Kashmir. The elections are scheduled to take place in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with results expected to be announced on October 4. This assembly election is significant as it will be the first electoral process in Jammu and Kashmir since the contentious abrogation of Article 370.
