New Delhi, April 30, 2025 — Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday announced that the Union Cabinet has decided to incorporate caste enumeration in the upcoming national census. The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, made the decision.
Briefing the media, Mr. Vaishnaw said the Cabinet, led by PM Modi, has decided to include caste enumeration in the upcoming Census. This reflects the government’s continued commitment to upholding the values and interests of Indian society.”
He noted that some States conducted caste surveys with political motives and a lack of transparency.
Mr. Vaishnaw highlighted the Centre’s commitment to social equity, citing the introduction of 10% reservation for economically weaker sections.
