Australia Leads with Strong Preference

Australia has officially overtaken the United States as the most preferred study destination for Indian students, according to a global survey conducted by international education provider IDP Education in March 2025. This shift marks a significant change in trends among international students from India.

The survey, which focused on first-choice preferences, found that 28% of Indian students now favour Australia for their higher education. This puts the country ahead of the United States, which captured 22% of first-choice responses, and the United Kingdom, which secured 21%.

US and UK Slip Behind in Student Preferences

Although the US and UK have historically held the top positions among Indian students seeking education abroad, this recent data suggests a clear change in perception. Indian students now appear more inclined towards Australia due to its welcoming immigration policies, post-study work opportunities, and quality education standards.

Meanwhile, the UK holds steady but slightly behind the US, likely due to rising visa restrictions and the cost of living. Despite this, it remains a strong contender, still attracting over one-fifth of Indian students’ first-choice selections.

Canada’s Popularity Declines Sharply

In contrast, Canada has experienced a notable drop in popularity. According to the IDP survey, Canada now accounts for only 13% of first-choice preferences among Indian students—a sharp decline of 6% compared to March 2024. This downturn may stem from stricter visa regulations, reduced work permits, and growing concerns over student safety.

Moreover, Indian students are increasingly prioritising countries that offer long-term opportunities and stability, areas in which Canada appears to be losing ground.

Factors Driving the Shift

Several key factors have contributed to Australia’s rise to the top. For one, the country continues to streamline visa processes for international students. In addition, universities in Australia actively engage with Indian students through scholarships, career development programmes, and cultural inclusion initiatives.

Furthermore, Australia’s reputation for quality education, especially in technology, healthcare, and business, remains strong. Combined with its vibrant student cities and relatively safe environment, these factors make Australia an increasingly attractive destination.

Conclusion: A New Global Education Landscape

In summary, the March 2025 IDP survey highlights a significant transformation in the preferences of Indian students studying abroad. While the US and UK maintain a considerable share, Australia now leads the pack with a clear edge. At the same time, Canada’s decline signals a need for reassessment of its policies to regain its appeal among international students.

With global competition for international students intensifying, destinations must adapt quickly to remain relevant. For now, Australia stands out as the top choice for Indian students seeking a better future abroad.
