Is India at risk after WHO’s Mpox alert?
Although the WHO has declared Mpox a global health emergency, the risk of an outbreak in India is low. The EU, US, and Canada approved the MVA-BN vaccine in 2022, and the country is now using it.While there was a rise in cases in Africa that triggered alerts from the WHO, India has not experienced a significant increase in cases. Kerala reported the most recent Mpox case in March, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in India to 30 since 2022.
Health officials are reassuring the public that they do not expect an increase in Mpox cases and encourage everyone to remain calm. The health ministry may introduce new guidelines for airports and seaports to help them monitor and manage any potential cases according to established protocols. India’s guidelines from 2022 indicate that the Mpox virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets during close contact, as well as through direct contact with bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces.
International Response:
The upsurge in Mpox cases has pushed several countries, particularly in Europe, to increase their alert levels. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) raised its Mpox risk assessment from “low” to “moderate” after detecting a new strain in Sweden, marking the first case outside Africa.
